1148 Klal 59 Siman 10: Shinui Makom 12 - Walking While Eating 1

We are beginning siman 10. If one moves from room to room while eating, the Chayei Adam writes that one would need a new bracha in the new makom. He explains that we look at every bite by itself, so subsequent bites consumed in the new makom are not covered by the first bracha made in the previous makom. However, if one had intent at the beginning of the bracha to move rooms, they would not need a new bracha, as we learned previously (shiur 1142).

We learned (shiur 1141) that the Mishnah Berurah holds that one does not need to make a new bracha between rooms within the same house, so the Chayei Adam’s halacha is irrelevant according to him. However, the Mishnah Berurah writes that It would apply mi’bayis le’bayis, moving between different houses. If one had intent at the time of the bracha, and was eating while moving from bayis le’bayis, they would not need to make a new bracha.

Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach zt”l points out that an item such as a sucking candy, where one does not take subsequent bites from the item, even the Chayei Adam would agree does not require a new bracha in a different makom.

However, the Chazon Ish is quoted not like Rav Shlomo Zalman. Rav Chaim Kanievsky writes that, as a child, the Chazon Ish saw him eating a hard candy, and told him to take it out of his mouth and make a new bracha when he went outside. It appears the Chazon Ish held that it is not sufficient for food to be in one’s mouth in order for the bracha to cover it, but it must be swallowed in order to be covered. We learned previously about this question (shiur 1146), and although the Mishnah Berurah is lenient and holds that the bracha takes effect when one chews, many understand that the bracha does not take effect until swallowing. If so, over here, the Chazon Ish holds that the liquid from the candy which was not yet swallowed did not receive a bracha, so when one effects a shinui makom, they will need a new bracha in order to cover the subsequent liquid from the candy.

However, the Chazon Ish appears to contradict himself. The Chazon Ish writes that if one makes a bracha achrona and realizes they have food stuck in between their teeth, they do not need to make a new bracha rishona in order to swallow those pieces. According to the Magen Avraham, who holds that bracha achrona does not necessarily mean the end of an eating session (see shiur 1145), one certainly does not need to make a new bracha rishona, because one certainly intends to eat the leftover food in their mouth, so the bracha achrona does not demonstrate that they ended their eating session.

However, according to most other achronim (including the Chazon Ish), who hold that the bracha achrona inherently ends the eating session, one would not be able to eat the pieces of food stuck between their teeth, unless they hold like the Mishnah Berurah, that the bracha rishona takes effect even on food that has not yet been swallowed, as long as it has been chewed. If so, this psak of the Chazon Ish contradicts the story from Rav Chaim Kanievsky.

Rav Yonasan Karp, in his sefer Hilchos Yom B’Yom, writes that the story with Rav Chaim and the Chazon Ish is missing details, and therefore it is hard to draw conclusions from it. Therefore, we can assume the Chazon Ish holds that one does not make a new bracha on a hard candy, in accordance with Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach.

Summary

  • One who is eating and moves from inside the house to outside, must make a new bracha to continue eating.
  • Food which is already in one’s mouth does not need a new bracha to swallow it.
  • If one had intent to move mi’bayis le’bayis at the time of their bracha, and is eating while they are moving, they will not need to recite a new bracha rishona in their new place.
  • If one is moving within rooms of the same house, one does not make a new bracha rishona, even if they are not eating as they are moving.
  • One may swallow food particles which remain in their mouth after making a bracha achrona, without saying a new bracha.
