We are continuing in siman 11, where the Chayei Adam discusses the extent of the kavod one must have for their parents.
The Chayei Adam continues, and writes that there are actually two opinions regarding how to understand the extent of the chiyuv of kibud av v’eim in respect to parents causing a child a financial loss.
The first opinion (which we learned yesterday) holds that a child may never prevent a parent from causing them a financial loss, but may bring them to a din torah to recoup the damage as appropriate.
The second opinion holds that a child may try to prevent a parent from causing the child a financial loss, even if the parents have the means to pay back the damage they would cause, in consideration of the time and resources necessary to expend in order to recoup the loss. Nevertheless, if the parent does cause damage, the child may not embarrass the parent nor express frustration towards them.
According to everyone, when the child knows the parents do not have the financial resources to pay back the damage they would cause, the child is allowed to prevent them from causing damage.
Summary
